Royalty and Republicanism in Italy; Or, Notes and Documents Relating to the Lombard Insurrection and to the Royal War of 1848

Royalty And Republicanism In Italy; Or, Notes And Documents Relating To The Lombard Insurrection And To The Royal War Of 1848 by Joseph Mazzini. This work surveys the Italian national movement around 1848–1849, analyzing the emergence of a national, republican character and contrasting it with the monarchist approach of the time. It traces the Lombard insurrection, its republican leadership, and the sequence of events from the Milan barricades to the eventual fusion with Piedmont, arguing that the true path to Italian unity lay in a broad-based people’s revolution rather than a dynastic war. Grounded in documentary evidence, it discusses the roles of Rome, Venice, and Lombardy, cites dispatches from Palmerston and Abercromby, and critiques the Moderates and Charles Albert for jeopardizing independence in favor of royal calculations. The author defends republican principles—liberty, independence, and national sovereignty—and envisions a future Italy where God and the people guide a unified, free nation, with Rome as a spiritual centre. The volume also includes memorials and epistles on the Italian struggle and its international resonance.
