Rugb?ana, by an Old Rugb?an Signing Himself C.J.M.

Rugbœana, By An Old Rugbœan Signing Himself C.J.M by Charles John Mott. Rugbeana is a nostalgic, anecdotal survey of Rugby School and its environs in the 19th century, written by an alumnus who reflects on the school’s founders, masters, and changing life. The book blends memoir, social commentary, and antiquarian detail, tracing Rugby’s development from Lawrence Sheriff’s endowment and the Arnold era through the mid-Victorian reforms under Jex Blake and other headmasters. It records the town and school Close, the Library and Museum, and the laboratories, with practical guidance on visiting Rugby and understanding its precincts. The volume also charts Rugby’s sporting culture—the Grand Military and Rugby Hunt steeplechases, the Atherstone and Pytchley packs, and the energetic life of the Rugby Volunteer Rifles—alongside portraits of famous Rugbeans, school rituals, and preparatory schools. Interleaved with poems and memorials, and appended statutes, the work stands as a vivid chronicle and affectionate tribute to Rugby as an English educational landmark.
