About the Author

Alister Satchell volunteered for the Royal Australian Navy in 1940, when his statistical and mathematical qualifications instantly recommended him for training as a cipher officer. Appointed to the Aquitania in March 1943, he was to make fifty-three successive Atlantic crossings in the ship. After the war he settled in Melbourne, establishing a successful firm of loss adjusters.
