Synopsis
In this expansion of the 1996 edition (titled The Russian Far East: Forests, Biodiversity Hotspots, and Industrial Developments ), Newell, who works for Friends of the Earth-Japan, the volume co-sponsor, offers a starting point "toward sustainable development" (as a new section is called) of the resource-rich eastern third of the Russian Federation. In chapters organized by Russian political divisions rather than ecological boundaries, 90 contributors address environmental and cultural conservation challenges in this highly diverse region. The reference includes statistical tables and figures, color photographs and maps, and appended material. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
