From the Preface:" Prompted by the solicitations of friends, I have collected from the various publications in which they have appeared these simple rustic rhymes, and now offer them for the first time in the form of a little book. In them I have endeavored to portray country life as it is; its joys and its sorrows, it's humor and its pathos, its hopes for the future and its traditions of the past, not as seen from a distance, but from the vantage ground of a life spent among rural people."
