Ruth the Moabitess: A Textual, Historical, and Methodological Investigation of Identity, Covenant, and Genealogy in the Hebrew Bible

Ruth is welcomed into Israel’s covenantal life, joined to the household of Boaz, and placed within the genealogy leading to David. Yet the biblical narrative continues to call her “Ruth the Moabitess.”

Why does the text preserve that designation?

Ruth the Moabitess presents a sustained textual, historical, legal, and genealogical investigation into one of the Hebrew Bible’s most consequential questions: Does covenantal inclusion require the erasure or transformation of ancestral identity?

Moving carefully through Ruth, Deuteronomy 23, Israel’s assembly laws, ancient geography, patrilineal genealogy, the Davidic line, Matthew’s genealogy, and later Jewish interpretation, the authors distinguish categories that are frequently collapsed:

• Ethnic and ancestral identity
• Legal and territorial status
• Covenant participation
• Marriage and household incorporation
• Genealogical descent

The study tests conversion, assimilation, territorial-transfer, and genealogical-reclassification theories against the language and structure of the biblical record.
