An unsigned binding, likely the work of John Roulstone (ca. 1778-1826), deemed by Hannah Dustin French as "very likely the best binder of his time and place," with this copy displaying many of his characteristic tools and devices. For comparison, see Maser, BOOKBINDING IN AMERICA #22, similarly conceived. Belknap's work comprises a reprint of BAL 936, first appearing in 1795. [N.B. - The Wood family, at the time, was the wealthiest of Wiscasset, Maine, owning many ships and carrying on an extensive trade with England, selling cotton and lumber. The father, John T. Wood, together with his brother, Abiel Jr., had built impressive residences in town. The Wood-Foote House (constructed circa 1811-1825) remains today at High and Lee Street, descending through most of its years from Abiel's first ownership through succeeding family members].
