1st limited and numbered edition (No. 689/1750). VIII, 80 PP with 3 head-pieces, 1 tail-piece and 22 drawings, plus 124 b/w plates with 139 illust. (9 of the plates with tissue guard). Coloured frontispiece: Flemish Carrack (circa 1450). Gilt decorated cloth cover, gilt title on front cover and spine, top edge gilt. Top and bottom of spine frayed, foxing on some non glossy paper plates, some pencil annotations at bottom of some plates. Ingleton book plate and review of the 2nd edition of 1949 on front endpaper. Scarce. Near fine. 32 x 26.
