Cloth. Condition: Very good copy. 8vo. S.P. Continua del titulo: How to Ensure its Success as a Remedy; the Most Approved Forms; and Various Phases of Disease in Which It May Be Advantageously Employed. By Linnaeus Smilax, M.D. SOUTH AMERICAN INDIGENOUS MEDICINE & BOTANY] TREATISE ON AMAZONIAN SARSAPARILLA, NATIVE TO NORTHERN SOUTH AMERICA, WITH FOLDING BOTANICAL ENGRAVING. 8vo; (approx. 21 x 14 cm). xi, 90 pp. Contemporary cloth; Illustrated with a fine folding engraved frontispiece showing a herbarium specimen of the sarsaparilla plant (Smilax). Attractive mid-nineteenth-century popular medical treatise on Smilax (sarsaparilla), a climbing plant native to the tropical forests of northern South America, particularly the Amazon basin, where it had long been collected and traded. The author notes that sarsaparilla was first brought to Europe in the sixteenth century and highlights the most prized commercial variety, the so-called "Lisbon Sarsaparilla," obtained from the mouth of the Amazon by Portuguese and Spanish merchants. The book emphasizes that the plant was already widely used by Indigenous peoples of South America as a blood purifier and general remedy, a traditional knowledge later appropriated and adapted by European medicine. The treatise details its reputed therapeutic properties in tuberculosis, cancers, syphilitic affections, liver disorders, and rheumatic pains, and explains how to prepare and administer the drug in different pharmaceutical forms. The combination of this discussion of South American Indigenous medicinal practice with a handsome folding botanical engraving makes it a particularly appealing piece of nineteenth-century literature on South American materia medica.
