First British edition. Octavo. 267, [1] pp. Illustrated throughout. Publisher's plum cloth, covers with multiple blind-stamped fillet borders, gilt spine lettering and decoration, yellow endpapers. Spine with some minor extremity wear and a bit of soling, tops a bit bumped. Overall, a very good copy of this elusive edition.First publication outside of California of Hutching's marvelous guide book, spurring countless British tourists to make their way for the Golden State. Farquhar 4e notes that this edition contains the "same text and illustrations as c [i.e. the 1861 edition published by J.M. Hutchings & Co. in San Francisco] except that the illustration on p.184 has been redrawn, apparently as a concession to British good taste." That illustration show several people on a boat looking quite seasick; in the 1861 edition, one of the men is actually "losing his lunch" over the side.Intended as a tourist guide to bring more visitors to the Yosemite Valley and Northern California. Englishman James Mason Hutchings?an enterprising carpenter, gold miner, and journalist?first visited Yosemite in 1855. Having heard of the Mariposa Battalion?s encounter with a waterfall ?nearly a thousand feet high,? Hutchings hired two American Indian guides to take him to the site. When he returned, he reported his experience in the newspapers as a ?luxurious scenic banqueting.? To further whet the curious appetites of readers, he began publishing the Hutchings? California Magazine and became the authoritative voice regarding Yosemite. The premier edition contained the first published illustrations of Yosemite Valley, and the total 60 issues, published from 1856 to 1861, succeeded in turning Yosemite into an overnight sensation.
