Add to basketTHE SCULPTURE OF PICASSO BY ROLAND PENROSE ET AL 1967 HARD COVER DJ VG. I have a lot of books about Picasso and his art and this will be the first one newly listed among what will be many. I quote from the flap of the dust jacket to put this book in perspective-to wit: The text and illustrations of this book offer the most comprehensive account ever published of Picasso s sculpture. Though the number of these works is only a fraction of his prodigious output in painting Picasso has produced sculpture from 1901 to the present and at some periods of his life his preoccupation with this medium has been paramount. His greatness as a sculptor has long been recognized but the true significance of this art within his total creative achievements could not be revealed until after his eighty-fifth birthday when for the first time he allowed a full-scale retrospective of his sculpture for the most part still in his possession to be shown first in Paris-later in London and finally at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This book was issued in conjunction with that exhibition at the MOMA. Please find: The Sculpture of Picasso by Roland Penrose and with a chronology by Alicia Legg and a bibliography compiled by Inga Forslund. This large hard cover book (9 ¾ x 12 inches 232 pages) was published by the Museum of Modern Art in New York dated 1967 and the First (and limited) Edition (so stated in the colophon on the last page). It is bound in brown cloth boards with an embossed title on the cover and gilt titles on the spine. It is protected by a plain printed glossy dust jacket. The book is amply illustrated with 260 gravure plates which reproduce virtually all Picasso sculpture oeuvre. Condition: This book is in very good condition plus plus. The dust jacket shows some edge wear particularly at the top of the spine and along the rear gutter where there are some small holes. The glossy finish is also a bit rubbed. The inside of the spine of the dust jacket is darkened. The hard covers are clean and bright although one might argue that the gilt titles on the spine are a bit muted. Inside a former owner has left his name and date in red ink (!) on the front endpaper. That is the only mark I found in the book which is clean and bright throughout without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
