Baker is eventually sacked by President Johnson for spying on him, which Baker admits to in his writings. Baker suppressed for some time, John Wilkes Booth's diary after his capture and killing, and after Baker turned them over to the public soon noted that there were 18 pages missing. Baker's observance of the 18 missing pages, which had been there when he turned it over, has led to speculation that Stanton removed them to cover up any involvement he had in the assassination. ***.
