SHADOWS OF AMBITION: The Case of the Lost Polypropylene Formula in Milan (The Inspector Lucia Marini Mysteries)

It was the year 1959, and Milan stood as the pulsating heart of Italy—a city in constant motion, crowded with clattering trams and factories in full expansion. The lights and sounds of a country reborn after the difficult postwar years flowed along the boulevards and through the streets of the historic center, where refined elegance blended with the feverish energy of the industrial boom. It is within this setting, suspended between tradition and modernity, that the story you are about to read takes shape.
Shadows of Ambition begins in the laboratories of MilanTech Industries, an innovative company in the plastics sector whose reputation seemed destined to cross national borders thanks to a discovery with incalculable implications. Yet, like a bolt from a clear sky, a shocking event shattered that fragile equilibrium: the formula for a revolutionary polymer vanished without a trace, taking with it the peace of mind of those who had believed in a dream of progress. From that moment on, every certainty began to crumble at a relentless pace.
A mystery as dense as the Milanese fog that settled over the city: corridors whispering secrets, glass façades glowing in the darkest hours, and cutting-edge machinery that seemed to conceal unexpected presences. Tasked with shedding light on this intricate web is Commissioner Lucia Marini—brilliant, resolute—assisted by her invaluable collaborator Carlo Conti, a tireless inspector with a practical mind and a disarming, understated wit. Together, they form an investigative duo whose methods differ yet complement one another, united by the same unwavering pursuit of truth.
From the very first pages, you will sense their held breath, feel the tension that accompanies their initial interrogations, and share the doubts that accumulate with each new testimony. The early stages of the investigation lead them to retrace life paths, unspoken ambitions, and success stories capable of clouding the conscience of those who live them. And just when the spotlight seems firmly fixed on a single, likely suspect, deeper and far-reaching power struggles resurface—forces that propel the story beyond the boundaries of ordinary crime. Gradually, the shadows of a secret organization emerge, prepared to do anything to control the fate of a discovery with extraordinary potential.
Welcome, then, to Milan in 1959: an enigma awaits unraveling, a castle in Corenno Plinio stands ready, and an entire world opens before you—one shaped by science, ambition, moral lessons, buried secrets, and decisions capable of changing more than one life. Make yourselves comfortable, but not too much: Shadows of Ambition is ready to lead you into places you never suspected existed, toward a threshold where the reality of facts blends with the shadows of uncertainty. Enjoy the reading.
