This is a group of obscure and hard to find issues of a mid-Meiji periodical. * Each issue is bound with a b.w. pictorial cover, and many b.w. illustrations, some have a single color page plate. . 1. Vol. 5, no. 19, 1893, 1 full single-page color plate it has a small, mended tear, else many b.w. illustrations, 64p. . 2. Vol. 5, no. 20, 1893.,1 full single-page color plate, many b.w. illustrations, 64p. . 3. Vol. 6, no. 13, 1894, 1 full single-page color plate, many b.w. illustrations, 56p. . 4. Vol. 6, no. 14, 1894, 1 full single-page color plate, many b.w. illustrations, 56p. . *** THE SUBJECT: This is an eclectic work, teaching the Japanese about the western world, the Eiffel tower, monarchs of Europe, Japanese fairy tales, stories, folk tales, various stories, Japanese history, and obscure foreign articles yet to be seen by the common Japanese, foreign works &c. *** There is a loose double-folded color plate loose with this group, showing a Meiji-period Japanese fan decorated with two Japanese women, and a scene on the river and pagodas. *** CONDITION: Each volume is bound in the original illustrated covers, stiff wrappers. Spines a bit worn, paper "toned," but solid, some of the usual and minor fading, a few dog ears, rubs to edges, spine, *** These were a presentation from a Japanese friend to a collector, with his penciled name on the covers, a few of the illustrations are pencil captioned for the benefit of the non-Japanese speaking collector. *** These are nicely b.w. illustrated with Furigana along side the Kanji for easy reading by most young Japanese or uneducated Japanese adults. ***.
