"The Stone Fleet was made up of aging ships, mostly whalers . loaded with stone . and sunk at the entrance to Charleston Harbor [in December, 1861], in hopes of obstructing blockade runners" (Wikipedia). Removed from a bound volume, with residue along the spine, closed tear into front page image, which also affects the small Charleston Harbor map verso.
