1993: by Nahum M. Sarna- The author's presentation of the Psalms is perceptive, erudite, and delightful.
Reviews:
This book is meant to give the reader entree into the psalter, and it does so with all the skill of a fine commentary. Sarna (biblical studies emeritus, Brandeis Univ.) shows impeccable scholarship in his work, while keeping it fully accessible to the lay reader. Most types of psalm are represented in the ten chosen: wisdom, creation, liturgical, cultic, lament, and thanksgiving psalms. The reader gets a good feel for the poetry of the psalms, for their cultural and political milieu, and for their function and use in the worship setting. The important human side of these writings is also allowed to speak, as the hopes, doubts, and anxieties in the psalms are given expression. "The vagaries and dilemmas of the human condition find expression in abundance," Sarna insists, demonstrating why the Book of Psalms is the most loved of the Scriptures. If there is not a place in your library for biblical commentary per se, this book is an excellent proxy.
