SOULFUL HOUSE

Known as a dreamer of houses, acclaimed architect Dungan’s second book is filled with transcendent homes shaped by landscape, materiality, and light.

Renowned for the organic beauty and poetic clarity of his architecture, Dungan presents a thoughtfully curated collection of his most recent residential projects, an evolving body of work across diverse landscapes, offering an intimate look at how his distinct architectural language takes form in regions far beyond his Southern roots. Dungan’s work is shaped by the landscape—structures that rise from their surroundings with a sense of inevitability and grace. Through richly photographed homes and revealing essays on topics including emotion, balance, and form, the volume traces the inspirations, craft, and guiding principles that define his vision and reinforce the belief of home as an intimate personal expression of human life.

Across the pages—printed on sumptuous, heavy stock—the houses unfold with remarkable presence. The journey moves from a sun-washed Pacific enclave to a cottage on the raw, wind-carved coasts of Nova Scotia, from a Pennsylvania barn reimagined on the tropical hillsides of the Dominican Republic to a ranch on the vast terrain of the American West. All are united by their warm, livable interiors, thoughtful flow, and natural finishes. Beautifully photographed details invite lingering: stucco warmed by afternoon light, a quiet alcove shaped by shadow and scale. More than ten projects, including Dungan’s own residence, create a meditation on architecture as lived poetry.

A resonant voice in the world of architecture, Jeffrey Dungan’s many honors include awards from the American Institute of Architects, the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, and the Palladio Award. In 2024, Forbes named him one of the top 200 architects in the United States. He is the author of The Nature of Home.
