ôThe people of the North have been the source of liberty in Europe.,ö Montesquieu said in 1748, drawing on a tradition that went back to antiquity. Down the centuries as Vikings, warriors, storytellers, scientists, artists and builders of societies, the people of the Nordic countries have borne out this view. An understanding of the North has always been crucial to an understanding of Europe--and is no less relevant amid the changes sweeping Europe in the 1990s. Chapters, written by scholars of history, include: The Nordic CountriesÆ Significance for Europe; The Great Migrations; What the Vikings Meant to Europe; Wilderness, Uninhabited Because of the Cold; The Heroic Age of the Natural Sciences; RussiaÆs Two Nordic Landscapes; On the Significance of Nordic Art; A Spanish Viking Girl; The European NationsÆ Nordic Nature; In Harmony with Nature; The Significance of the Nordic Model; The Land of the Hyperboreans. Many superb illustrations and reproductions enhance this text., English, Year1992, Illust. B/W73, Illust. Color150, ISBN 9291200603, Code 2084. Hardbound, Not in perfect condition., Bibl. Bios.
