Accounts book for South Brent Cricket Club covering the period 1889 to 1911. During this time G.P. Butcher was the honorary club scorer and treasurer - the book has come directly from his descendants. Before moving to the West Country Butcher had been an accomplished athlete, often competing alongside WG Grace and others for London Athletic Club in the late 1860s and early 1870s. The book gives some extraordinary insights into the running of a small rural cricket club with regular expenditures on travel (pony & trap), equipment, ground maintenance, pony feed, telegrams, "posh cards" and regular luncheons. By 1889 the club already had an account with Gunn & Moore for the supply of equipment - the company was founded in Nottingham in 1885. The cricket club in South Brent seemed to fold many years ago - the fixtures in those days were against teams such as Totnes, Staverton, Plympton, Buckfastleigh, Sherwell anmd Sparkwell. Includes some printed balance sheets pasted in (including full lists of subscribers), although most of the records are handwritten. Small 8vo.
