- Book 2 of 12: Speak Like an American: Idioms
Understand the Idioms Americans Use to Talk About Business, Money, and Success.
You know the English words.
Money.
Work.
Business.
Success.
But then someone says,
"Show me the money."
"Break even."
"Cut corners."
"Bring home the bacon."
"In the red."
Suddenly, the conversation doesn't sound like the English you studied.
That's because Americans rarely talk about business and money using literal language.
They rely on idioms that communicate ideas quickly, naturally, and confidently—idioms you'll hear in offices, meetings, interviews, negotiations, podcasts, news reports, and everyday conversations.
If you don't understand those idioms, you may recognize every word and still miss the real message.
SPEAK LIKE AN AMERICAN: Show Me the Money (Second edition) helps you understand the authentic idioms Americans use when talking about work, business, finances, leadership, opportunity, and professional success.
As Volume 2 of the Speak Like an American series, this book takes you beyond textbook English and into the language native speakers use every day in workplaces, companies, and real-world business situations.
This isn't another alphabetical dictionary of idioms.
It's a practical learning guide that organizes 470 authentic American idioms by real-life themes, helping you understand not only what they mean, but when Americans use them, why they choose them, and how they shape professional communication.
Inside You'll Discover* 470 authentic American English idioms
* Everyday expressions about business, work, and making deals
* Idioms related to wealth, financial success, and managing money
* Vocabulary for leadership, authority, and workplace communication
* Common ways Americans talk about risk, opportunity, and competition
* Expressions about honesty, ethics, and business decisions
* Real-world language used in meetings, workplaces, interviews, podcasts, news, and everyday life
Every Idiom Helps You• Understand its real meaning
• Recognize how Americans naturally use it
• Learn when it sounds appropriate in conversation
• Improve listening comprehension
• Build confidence in authentic communication
Learning these idioms does more than expand your vocabulary.
It helps you understand how Americans discuss money, careers, business, and success in everyday life.
You'll recognize these idioms in meetings, interviews, podcasts, business articles, movies, television shows, and conversations with native speakers. Instead of translating words literally, you'll understand the message, the intent, and the cultural meaning behind every expression.
Whether you're an ESL or EFL learner, an international student, a job seeker, a professional, an entrepreneur, an English teacher, or simply someone who wants to communicate more naturally, this book gives you practical language skills that traditional English courses rarely teach.
Volume 2 builds on the foundation established in Volume 1, introducing the essential idioms of business, work, and financial life. By mastering these expressions, you'll improve your listening skills, communicate with greater confidence, and better understand the language of today's American workplace.
Don't just learn business English.
Understand the idioms behind it.
Recognize the expressions that drive everyday professional conversations.
And speak English with the confidence of someone who truly understands American business culture.
Because real fluency isn't just about knowing English.
It's about understanding what people really mean.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
