Explore the birth and evolution of New York's Tammany Societies, from patriotic clubs to political machines.
This scholarly study untangles their influence on American politics and the development of party government.
This book surveys the origins, key figures, and evolving practices of the Saint Tammany Society in New York City. It explains how early social and patriotic aims gave way to organized political power, and it places the movement in a broader national context. The work draws on manuscripts, newspapers, and institutional archives to present a careful account without speculation.- Learn how the society formed, including its first constitutions and the role of William Mooney
- See how rituals, celebrations, and toasts reflected shifting political loyalties
- Understand the transformation from fraternal club to a force in Democratic politics
- Discover how later events reshaped Tammany Hall and its enduring influence
