Grade 2-4-- In a brief, upbeat story, fourth-grader Toni, who is overweight and shy, learns to ride. Gentle Star and instructor Jane boost the girl's self-esteem, helping Toni to advance quickly. She has no discouraging setbacks, and riding completely changes her life. She loses weight, improves her skills in anticipation of her first show, and tops it off by taking the blue ribbon. The book's young audience won't mind the predictable plot or a few minor errors (e.g., Toni matches her jodhpurs with tall boots). Simple sentences and action scenes portray the here-and-now without any frills. The story's major strength is its realistic detail about riding and horsemanship.
