About this Item

8vo. (21 cm.) [12]3-208p. Blue-green cloth with gilt letters on the front cover and the spine and with a pictorial onlay to the front cover. The onlay has a vignette of a large swan on the water in white with gilt highlights beneath a crescent moon in a blue-green field. Top edge gilt. Binding signed "C" most likely for Thomas Maitland Cleland [1880-1964]. Minor wear to extremities with nothing rubbed through, pictorial onlay very lightly soiled, gilt bright, previous owner's signature and date, else very good to near fine with no other internal markings. Elizabeth M. Wheelock [1869-1917] was a teacher in the Horace Mann School. Stories include the following: The Master Singer of Nuremberg; The Flying Dutchman; Lohengrin; The Rhinegold; The Walkyries; and The Dusk of the Gods. Most of [Thomas Maitland] Cleland¿s designs for book covers were done between 1907 and 1913 when he served as art editor for the McClure Company. Cleland's work was greatly influenced by the styles of William Morris, Walter Crane, and Daniel Berkeley Updike. Monogram: C. [source: Publisher's Bindings Online]. Bookseller Inventory # 006059
