Grade 4-8-This title blends biographical data, literary review, and the effects of the "Harry Potter" books on the world, written at a reading level that is accessible to many of Rowling's fans. Eight chronological chapters begin by introducing Harry Potter and attributing the success of these books to the author's perseverance and talent, and a little luck. The text discusses her life from birth to the present, including the books themselves. The movie is addressed, as is a copyright or trademark infringement lawsuit initiated by Nancy K. Stouffer and other legal issues that resulted after the success of the series. What little is known about the fifth book is incorporated to give this biography a temporarily up-to-date status. Uninspired black-and-white photographs break up the text, usually between sentences. Some, but not all of the sources, are listed in detail in the "Further Reading" section. Although average in appearance and writing, this book does fill a need for biographical information about a hugely popular author.

These volumes in the Overcoming Adversity series focus on the careers of Rowling and Wonder, using a combination of personal commentaries, anecdotes, and factual material to give a glimpse of their personalities. In the Rowling volume, for example, Rowling honestly recalls her shame and depression during her term on public assistance. In Stevie Wonder, Williams follows Wonder's life and career, which have been riddled with tragedy and pain, and taps Wonder's lyrics to explain how the musician uses his music to tell the story of his life. Both books have black-and-white photographs, a chronology, and suggestions for further reading. Heather Hepler
