About this Item

Description:

266pp. Original half cloth and paper boards, paper label. Minor chipping to label. Some soiling and noticeable chipping to paper, corners worn. Modern bookplate on rear pastedown, minor foxing. Good. Untrimmed. An account of some of the battles of the War of 1812, told from the British side, wrongly attributed to George Gleig. Gleig was a Scottish soldier in Wellington's 85th Light Infantry who suffered three wounds in five battles during the War of 1812. After his military career he followed his father into the Church. Gleig's collection of articles on the Peninsular War, THE SUBALTERN, was published in 1825 and may explain the question surrounding his authorship of the present work. Howes claims the work is "[a]ttributed erroneously to George R. Gleig, author of a similar work, A NARRATIVE OF THE CAMPAIGNS OF THE BRITISH ARMY." This is a different book, and the author is a different British officer. The author, whoever it was, was at Baltimore, Washington, and New Orleans, and gives a firsthand account of these events. HOWES S1115. SABIN 27570. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 19007. Seller Inventory # WRCAM49084
