La maturazione e l'ossificazione della sutura mediopalatale sono processi dipendenti dall'et� che influenzano significativamente la pianificazione del trattamento ortodontico, in particolare per l'espansione mascellare. Nella prima infanzia, la sutura � ampia, diritta e riempita di tessuto connettivo lasso, il che la rende altamente reattiva alle forze ortopediche. Con l'avanzare dell'et�, soprattutto durante l'adolescenza, la sutura subisce una progressiva interdigitazione, diventando pi� complessa e resistente all'espansione. L'ossificazione inizia tipicamente nella regione posteriore e progredisce anteriormente, portando alla fusione parziale o completa della sutura, di solito durante la tarda adolescenza o la prima et� adulta. Tuttavia, la tempistica della fusione varia ampiamente tra gli individui e non � strettamente dipendente dall'et�. Tecniche di imaging come la CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) sono utili per valutare lo stadio di maturazione della sutura. La comprensione di questo processo di maturazione � fondamentale, poich� l'espansione mascellare rapida (RME) non chirurgica � pi� efficace prima dell'ossificazione, mentre le tecniche chirurgiche o assistite da miniscrew (come la MARPE) possono essere necessarie dopo la fusione.
