About this Item
Hardcover. Reprint, 1634. Written in Latin. Boards are bound in vellum. Lugd. Batav. Ex officina Elzeviriana. Illustrated title page bearing a coat of arms bearing the word "Fert", repeated four times within the illustration. Fert which was the motto of the royal house of Savoy-Sardinia and Italy, the House of Savoy, and was adopted by King Vittorio Amedeo II (1666â??1732)(Wikipedia). From the introductory pages, the rough translation from Latin from reads: "The most illustrious man, Dominic Molinus, a Venetian senator, of all the teachers of the maecenatis, this is the syllogism of the masters." Vellum shows wear with some indentation, staining, patina and some minor cracking, yet remains intact and unique. Some curling of the vellum is evident at both the head and foot on the edges. Stitch marks are slightly showing on the outside hinge. Spine is cocked. All edges have toned, with the deepest brown tone occuring at the head. Handwritten lettering in ink records the author's name and title of this book on the spine. Pastedowns are starting to separate from boards. Inner cracks are present at both the front and back hinges, yet are firmly attached. Frontispiece is detached, yet present, displaying a black and white engraving of Torquato Tasso on onion skin paper. Frontispiece is foxed and chipped. The first 13 pages bear some numbers at the bottom, but are sporadically numbered. Pages are complete and have fairly evenly toned, with minor foxing speckled throughout. Dampstains and several small tears or chips are present within the inner leaves, but do not compromise the integrity of the text. Binding is tight. No marginalia within, except for doodles and numbers written in ink within the introductory pages at the front and back. Pages show a slight wave. 315 pp. At just 4.5" tall and 2.5" wide, this tiney book fits comfortably in the palm of one's hand. For nearly being 400 years old, this book is in remarkable, overall "very good" condition. Additional photographs available upon request. Full refund if not satisfied. Seller Inventory # 065781
