About this Item
SACROBOSCO (JOHANNES DE) La Sphere, augmentée de nouveaux commentaires . . . mis de Latin en François par Guillaume des Bordes. Paris, H. de Marnef & la veuve Guillaume Cavellat, 1584. Device on title, diagrams and woodcuts, last leaf with woodcuts of the sphere and another device. BOUND WITH Camburat, Abrégé de la vie et du système de Gassendi. Bouillon, 1770. Plus two other historical theological tracts. The whole bound in 18th-century calf gilt. Internally, title toned, with general light toning and occasional light foxing. PROVENANCE: Faint inscription on the title dated 1702, which appears to read Jean-Baptiste Médecin du Roy, likely referring to Jean-Baptiste Denys, the personal physician to King Louis XIV. Denys is notable for performing the first fully documented human blood transfusion. Ownership marks like these were often effaced during the French Revolution, particularly on books belonging to the aristocracy, clergy, or institutions connected to the old regime. RARE FRENCH TRANSLATION of La Sphere by Sacrobosco, a medieval astronomical text written around 1230. De Sphaera Mundi ("On the Sphere of the World") introduced the Ptolemaic model, describing Earth as a sphere at the center of concentric celestial orbits. This foundational work shaped astronomical studies in European universities during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The Abrégé de la vie et du système de Gassendi (1770), by Camburat, offers an overview of the life and philosophy of Pierre Gassendi, a significant 17th-century French philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician.
