Consider one of the great mysteries of the New Testament: how can Mary Magdalene discover Jesus outside the tomb and mistake him for a gardener? How can two followers of Christ walk with him for miles, but not recognize him until he blesses and breaks bread? And how, even as his disciples gather around their resurrected Lord, can doubt remain?
This is one of the wonders of living in the world of the Spirit. We can be uncertain. We can be doubtful. Our eyes can be willfully shut, but Christ’s presence never wavers. He is ahead of us, behind us, and beside us constantly.
Presbyterian pastor Stephen D. McConnell explores the deep meaning of Christ’s eternal presence in Safe at Home, a collection of inspirational messages arranged into short, devotional chapters. McConnell reminds us nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.
Safe at Home concludes with seven chapters using baseball as an easily grasped metaphor for God’s presence. Despite the strikes, errors, steals, and sacrifices of life, we begin and end at home, safe in God’s grace. May his eternal promise inspire you to step up to the plate, take your turn at bat, and live to the fullest.
Stephen D. McConnell is a fourth generation Presbyterian pastor. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Westminster College in New Willington, Pennsylvania; his Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey; and his Doctor of Letters from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.
