“It’s a divorce memoir as much as it is a travel book…an inspiring tale of self-discovery and mother-daughter friendship.” ~Kirkus Reviews
For forty years, Colleen Miniuk pursued perfection, achievement, and society’s definition of success only to discover that none of it guaranteed happiness.
When her marriage unexpectedly ends, Colleen is forced to confront a devastating question: If everything she built her life around has fallen apart, what does freedom look like now?
Seeking healing, she and her mother set out to paddle across Lake Powell along the Colorado River, an ambitious journey through one of the American Southwest’s most breathtakingly beautiful but unforgiving landscapes. Like life itself, the trip does not go as planned.
Through powerful adventures from Moab to Lake Mead, full-color photography, raw introspection, and the untamed lessons of the river, So Said the River is more than a travel memoir. It is a courageous exploration of resilience, self-discovery, reinvention, and the search for authentic fulfillment beyond perfectionism, achievement, and expectations.
For readers drawn to transformational memoirs, women’s journeys, outdoor adventure, and stories of rebuilding after loss, So Said the River offers an inspiring reminder: sometimes life’s greatest detours lead to the truest version of ourselves.
