كان فتح القسطنطينية حدثًا من الأحداث العظيمة في عمر الدولة العثمانية، في منتصف القرن الخامس عشر الميلادي حيث بلغت معه دولة الخلافة أقصى ازدهارها، وعاشت أزهى عصورها. ومحرز قصب السبق في ذلك هو السلطان محمد الثاني الذي يعده المؤرخون واحدًا من أبرز الشخصيات التي حولت مجرى التاريخ الإسلامي والعالمي، بتصديه لآخر فلول الدولة البيزنطية في الشرق، وانتزاع القسطنطينية عاصمتهم ومعقلهم الأخير. والمؤلّف في هذا الكتاب يُلقي الضوء على الظروف التاريخية والسياسية التي احاطت بذلك السلطان القوي النجيب الذي تولى الحكم شابًا لا يجاوز الحادية والعشرين من عمره، واستطاع بحنكته ودهائه أن يوطد دعائم إمبراطوريته ويواصل التوسع، محققا ما عجز عنه أسلافه من فتح القسطنطينية وما وراءها. ويعرض المؤلف كذلك جوانب من شخصية الفاتح، وأسلوبه في الحكم والإدارة. وانعكاسات ذلك على نهضة دوليه وارتقائها.
