بالتزامن مع الإعلان عن إنشاء دولة إسرائيل عام 1948 في فلسطين، اندلعت الحرب بين الدولة الجديدة والدول العربية المحيطة بها. وقد أرسلت الأمم المتحدة الكونت السويدي فولك برنادوت للوساطة بين المتحاربين ولإعداد خطة لحلٍ سلمي للصراع. لكن بعض مقترحات الوسيط الكونت برنادوت لقيت معارضة شديدة من الطرف الإسرائيلي، خاصّة مطلبه الذي نصّ على حقّ جميع اللاجئين الفلسطينيين في العودة إلى ديارهم وبيوتهم التي غادروها على أمل العودة إليها بعد أن تهدأ المعارك. في 17 سبتمبر 1948، قُتل الكونت برنادوت وقُتل معه عقيد فرنسي كان جالساً بجانبه في السيارة، وذلك حين هوجم موكبه وأُطلقت النار على سيارته في شارع عام في المنطقة الواقعة تحت السيطرة اليهودية في القدس. نفّذت الهجوم عصابة شتيرن اليمينية المتطرفة، التي أصبح زعيمها إسحاق شامير فيما بعد رئيساً لوزراء إسرائيل، لكن لم يُحاسب أحد أبداً على ارتكاب جريمة الاغتيال. وقد نأت الحكومة الإسرائيلية المؤقتة بنفسها بشدة عن هذا الفعل، لكن هناك في الواقع الكثير من الدلائل التي تشير إلى أنها كانت متورطة بعمق في جريمة الاغتيال. وفي هذا الكتاب، بحث المؤلف، يوران بورين، ودقّق في وثائق التحقيق السويدي في جريمة الاغتيال، والتي كانت خاضعة سابقاً للسريّة، فخرج باستنتاجه المثير للجدل علمت الحكومة الإسرائيلية آنذاك أن برنادوت كان معرضاً للخطر. لكنها تقاعست مع ذلك في تأمين الحماية العسكرية اللازمة له. وبعد وقوع الجريمة، تأكدت الحكومة من هروب القتلة. وهكذا، وكما قال نائب برنادوت، الحائز على جائزة نوبل، رالف بانش، فإن حكومة إسرائيل المؤقتة هي التي تتحمل المسؤولية الكاملة عن جريمة الاغتيال.
