Samuel Little

He killed sixty confirmed women over thirty-five years. No one was looking for them.

Samuel Little was confirmed by the FBI in 2019 as the most prolific serial killer in American history. He confessed to ninety-three murders. More than thirty remain unverified. He operated across nineteen states and at least forty cities. He was not identified as a serial killer until 2012.

The women he killed were predominantly Black. They were women navigating poverty and addiction and the survival economies of American cities. When they died, their deaths were not classified as murders. They were classified as accidents. As drug overdoses. As hypothermia. As natural causes.

This was not bad luck. It was not incompetence. It was the predictable output of a forensic and investigative apparatus that had been built, over decades, to direct its full resources toward some deaths and not others. Samuel Little read this apparatus accurately. He used it for thirty-five years as the operational condition of his career. He was right that no one was accounting for his victims. For thirty-five years, no one was.

THE WOMEN NOBODY LOOKED FOR is the story of sixty confirmed women — their lives, their deaths, and the specific, documented institutional failures that allowed those deaths to go unrecognised as murder for three and a half decades. It examines, in precise and evidenced detail, three interlocking failures: the forensic mechanism by which Little’s killings were misclassified as accidents; the racial hierarchy of grief that made those misclassifications stick; and the jurisdictional architecture that prevented the pattern from ever being assembled into a recognisable picture.

Between 2018 and 2020, Little produced more than thirty portraits of his victims from memory — women he had killed, some of them forty years earlier. The FBI published them. Some were identified. Many were not. The book opens with one of these paintings. It closes with the same one. In between is the argument for why she is still waiting for a name.
