More Than Sand and Sea : Images of Cape Cod

Gerard Brender à Brandis, bookwright and wood engraver, produced the 30 illustrations for "More Than Sand And Sea: Images of Cape Cod" from sketches drawn during visits to the Cape, using burins to cut into polished end grain box wood to create the stark, clear and detailed images. His subjects include the simple homes, lighthouses and windmills, delicate flowers and enduring trees, sweeping panorama of dunes and ocean surf, and wildlife. Twenty writers are represented in quotations edited by Allen Young to provide context and continuity for the engravings--from the 19th century essays of Henry David Thoreau to the contemporary verse of Marge Piercy, Brendan Galvin and Mary Oliver. This Millers River book is a facsimile of a hand-made edition of 60 copies published by Brandstead Press, Carlisle, Ontario, Canada.
