Sarah's oil

She was eleven years old when the oil struck and overnight, America had a millionaire it didn’t know how to explain.

In 1913, deep in the red dirt of Oklahoma, oil erupted from land everyone said was worthless. The owner? A young Black girl named Sarah Rector. In a nation still chained by segregation, her sudden wealth wasn’t celebrated—it was feared.

SARAH’S OIL: The True Story of America’s Youngest Millionaire and Her Vanished Fortune is a stunning work of narrative nonfiction that uncovers the hidden truth behind one of history’s most astonishing and erased stories. With the pacing of a novel and the precision of investigative journalism, Derek Danforth brings Sarah’s world to life—her rise, her struggle against a system designed to “protect” her money, and the haunting irony of a country that could not allow a Black child to be rich on her own terms.

Few people know that Sarah’s story changed American law, exposed the dark side of guardianship and greed, and revealed just how far power will go to control who profits from the land. What you’re about to discover will change how you see history, race, and the price of wealth in America.
