Sat Practice: The New Verbal Section

"SAT Practice: The New Verbal Section" by K. Titchenell (ISBN 0-9758796-0-X), takes a unique approach to helping high school juniors and seniors prepare for college and college entrance exams. The authors have also compiled an extensive resource page of links to material on the new SAT and test preparation resources, SAT books, and vocabulary books: http://www.abacus-es.com/sat/resources.html."SAT Practice" is not about how to take a test, but about improving those English verbal skills being tested on the SAT, ACT, TOEFL and other standardized exams -- as quickly, efficiently, and enjoyably as possible. Designed initially for homeschoolers attending class voluntarily, this book is both effective and fun.Although it is a mistake to take the SAT without having studied the exam itself, test-taking strategies, knowing when and when not to guess, how to eliminate many incorrect answers, how to manage time, etc., these tactics can only improve scores up to a certain point and are no replacement for knowledge of the subject. The College Board has designed the SAT specifically to measure verbal and mathematical skills and to minimize the efficacy of test-taking formulas. "SAT Practice" focuses specifically on the vocabulary, grammar, style, and writing skills that the SAT measures, and these are reinforced with reading comprehension and grammar quizzes, and writing projects akin to those found in the SAT. The reading selections in this work expose the student to a concentrated dose of SAT level vocabulary presented in context, a quantity otherwise encountered only by reading dozens or perhaps hundreds of works of literature. Rereading the short selections and taking the comprehension quizzes will help the reader to incorporate these terms into his or her active usable vocabulary. Studying the language notes and doing the writing exercises provide practice using the terminology and the varied sentence structure that examiners are looking for.The author has more than 20 years of experience teaching secondary school and community college and has been teaching SAT preparation classes for the past several years. The web page for "SAT Practice: The New Verbal Section," including sample chapter, index, table of contents, word list, and extensive excerpts, is: http://www.abacus-es.com/sat/ For more information contactAbacus Educational Servicessat@abacus-es.com

English vocabulary, usage, comprehension, and composition preparation for the New SAT.

As of spring 2005, the new SAT, now with twice as much emphasis on verbal skills as on mathematics, will have an essay component and an expanded grammar section. Students are expected to recognize and correct grammatical errors and to demonstrate competence in written English including a "varied, accurate, and apt vocabulary" and "meaningful variety in sentence structure." [The College Board]

Studying the language notes and doing the usage and writing exercises will help you learn to solve grammatical problems and will give you practice using the terminology and the varied sentence structure that examiners are looking for.
