About this title

When brave Ted helps his friends escape from Mighty Monster's castle on Monster Mountain only to become trapped himself in the castle, young readers are asked to help solve the puzzle and set Brave Ted free so that he may return home with his friends, too.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 1. Brave Ted, a teddy bear, and eight of his toy friends have been stolen by the rather friendly looking Mighty Monster. En route to its lair, the other toys have escaped from the bag one by one, but poor Brave Ted has been imprisoned in the Mighty Monster's castle. Not to worry, for Ted has somehow managed to dispatch Big Brown Bird with detailed rescue plans. It's up to readers to follow Brave Ted's directions and rescue him. This is where the "game" comes in. Each double-page spread is divided into two distinct sections. The larger of the two is a busy illustration of a particular setting (forest, zoo, fair, etc.) with a circuitous path. The accompanying text directs readers past, around, through, and behind a series of people, places, and things. The object is to locate one of Ted's friends on each page and eventually reach Mighty Mountain. Meant to be shared with one or two children at a time, this book obviously won't work with larger groups. The playful watercolor illustrations are reminiscent of (but unfortunately not quite as satisfying as) those found in the Ahlbergs' Each Peach Pear Plum (Viking, 1979). While the underlying premise is weak, the story will still provide a certain amount of entertainment for younger readers who enjoy "find-the-hidden-picture" activities.?Alicia Eames, Brooklyn Public Library
