Item description from seller

The "Shell" Transport and Trading Company, Limited, London; 1957. First Edition, First Printing. Quarto (4to). 135pp. A lavishly produced monograph issued to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the Shell company. Edited by Ian Cox, this unique interdisciplinary work features authoritative essays from eight renowned experts tracing the profound impact of the scallop shell on human culture. Chapters include Sir Mortimer Wheeler on the shell as a symbol in antiquity, James Laver on its place in art ("The Cradle of Venus"), and further essays covering its significance in heraldry, linguistics, marine biology, and gastronomy. Beautifully illustrated throughout with numerous full-colour plates, vintage photographs, and intricate drawings. Very good condition. The original striking red cloth boards feature gilt shell decorations on the front board which show small signs of rubbing. Spine has gold lettering, the spine is a little dulled. The heavy binding remains perfectly square, tight, and firm. Inside, the 135 pages are exceptionally fresh, clean, and crisp, with completely vibrant colour plates. Entirely free of previous owner marks. The pictorial endpapers are immaculate, showing none of the heavy foxing or browning common to this edition.…
