Denmark's Bromolle Kro, originally built in 1198, Sweden's Nobel-worthy Grand Hotel, and Norway's fjellstue (mountain cabins) eagerly await visitors. While the locations and accommodations may vary, the inns do share one common characteristic: a long, rich history. Most are at least 100 years old, and some are even several hundred years old.

Beginning with a brief history of inns in Scandinavia, Hansen provides the reader with a comprehensive guide to existing historic inns there. She includes both well-established hotels in the major cities and out-of-the-way country inns never before included in a travel guide. Hansen, an art historian living near Copenhagen, did the research herself, traveling around the Scandinavian countries, researching the history of each inn, and checking out the accommodations. She gives tips on getting around, what and where to eat, and methods of obtaining good hotel rates. Each entry contains a line drawing of the inn, the address, telephone number, web address (if available), rates, and a brief history of the inn. All the inns included are at least 100 years old, but many date back several centuries. The book is divided by country, covering Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
