Illustrated brown paper covered boards and with black lettering on both front and back panels. Maroon leather on spine with gilt lettering and illustrations. Professionally repaired as to spine, original laid-on. Board panels are heavily soiled, most edges are rubbed through. 3 1/2" diagonal crease at the upper left fore-edge corner of the back panel; back panel also has two indents toward the upper edge. External page edges are age- and soil-darkened. Back gutter is cracked but stable due to repair. "Embellished with forty-eight engravings." Engravings are three-on-a-page, all with tissue-guards. The illustrations that should be at page 39 are at page 47. The illustrations and tissue-guard at page 19 are loose. Previous owner's inscription on FFEP. Foxing through-out, more so by the illustration pages, but still very legible. Many of the illustrations have similar damp stains along the upper margins. Text block is snug due to repair.
