Seine Ermittlungen führen ihn weiter nach Italien auf die Spur einer obskuren Sekte, dem "Umbra Domini" sowie in die Clinica Baresi in dem kleinen Ort Montecastello, wo seine Schwester durch künstliche Befruchtung ihren Sohn empfangen hatte. Irgendwie scheint hier der Schlüssel zu liegen für die Anschläge, aber noch begreift Carpenter nicht, was die Frauen verbindet, die hierher zur Behandlung gekommen sind...
Der Schatten des Herrn beginnt mit einem Geständnis oder besser gesagt einer Beichte, deren Inhalt dem Leser jedoch bis zum Schluss verborgen bleibt. Das schreckliche Geheimnis, das Dr. Baresi seinem Beichtvater anvertraut, ist der Aufhänger für die folgende Geschichte, die zwar nicht ganz so "reißerisch" fortgesetzt wird, jedoch neugierig macht auf das, was folgen soll. Das hat zunächst scheinbar nichts mit dem Anfang zu tun, aber nach und nach werden die Zusammenhänge klarer. Die Spannung wird geschickt aufgebaut und gipfelt immer wieder in mehr oder weniger gefährlichen Situationen für unseren Helden. Leider legt der Autor nicht immer Wert auf durchgängige Logik, was man einem Roman wesentlich schwerer verzeiht als einem temporeichen Actionfilm. So verschickt Joe weiterhin fröhlich brisantes Material per Email, obwohl zuvor jemand die Passwörter auf seinem Computer geknackt hat und es mehr als wahrscheinlich ist, dass unbefugte Dritte mitlesen. Unbegreiflich, es sei denn, der Autor hat selbst keinen blassen Schimmer, wie das Internet funktioniert.
Was letztendlich in der Klinik vorging, erfährt der Leser Häppchenweise, obwohl er es natürlich (?) von Anfang an geahnt hat. Ob der Schluss nun überraschend ist oder nicht, er ließ mich das Buch zumindest mit einem Lächeln auf den Lippen beiseitelegen. Trotz einiger Schwächen ist Der Schatten des Herrn eine vergnügliche und spannende Lektüre für zwischendurch, auch wenn man nicht unbedingt ein Krimifan ist. Die stellenweise etwas konstruiert wirkende Handlung dürfte zwar so manchen stören, aber wenn man nicht zu sehr am Lack der Oberfläche kratzt, kann man durchaus auf seine Kosten kommen. --Monika Hübner
