Penge – now a busy, bustling, lively part of South East London – hasn’t always been like that. In 1837, when the population had reached almost 200, a group of landowners and others decided that it needed its own place of worship. They built Penge Chapel which in time became a school. As Penge grew, so did the school.
In A School for Penge Revisited, Graham Reeves follows the story of that growth. He shows how the school was affected by such things as population growth, legislation, staffing levels, lack of space, inspections, and a developing understanding of children’s needs
He draws on a remarkable archive of logbooks, registers, minute books and documents carefully compiled and preserved over the years, together with the memories of many who have been associated with the school.
A School for Penge Revisited describes the various separate departments – Boys’ and Girls’, Boys’, Girls’, Higher Level, and Infants’ – and the people who worked and studied in them. The different departments are now united in St John’s Church of England Primary School which will benefit from all profits from the sale of the book.
The school continues to stand at the heart of Penge and builds on the commitment of those who came before, maintaining a long and worthy tradition of promoting the learning and well-being of local children.
