- Book 9 of 9: Raising Resilient Kids: A Grown-Up’s Guide to Big Feelings and Bright Futures
Every child has a story to tell — but not every story is spoken aloud. Schoolyard Secrets invites readers to look beyond the surface of playground chatter and classroom commotion to discover the quiet messages children send through their behaviour. In this compassionate and deeply insightful guide, Marcus Raithe helps parents, teachers, and caregivers recognise the subtle signs that a child may be struggling emotionally or behaviourally — long before those struggles become crises.
From the child who can’t seem to make friends, to the one who’s always on the move, or the student whose laughter hides anxiety, each chapter explores one of ten tell-tale patterns that often go unnoticed. Drawing from modern psychology, classroom experience, and an understanding of child development, Raithe reframes behaviour not as defiance or disorder, but as communication. Every tantrum, silence, or outburst, he argues, is a clue to what a child is feeling but cannot yet express.
In “When Making Friends Feels Like a Mystery,” readers explore how social confusion and isolation can mask deeper anxieties. “Emotions That Explode Like a Volcano” reveals how frustration often hides fear or sensory overload. “Rules? What Rules?” examines the defiant child who may actually crave structure and understanding. Each chapter blends observation, empathy, and practical strategies for supporting children with patience and perspective.
Through vivid examples and real-world insight, Raithe teaches adults how to shift their focus from punishment to curiosity, from control to connection. He reminds us that children rarely “act out” without cause — their behaviour is their language, a coded message asking for help, safety, or belonging. By learning to read these signals, adults can prevent small emotional cracks from becoming lifelong fractures.
This book is not about labelling or diagnosing. It’s about noticing. It’s about paying attention to the small signs — the sudden change in tone, the unexplained tummy aches, the laughter that feels forced, or the eyes that avoid contact. These moments, subtle as they seem, are the keys to understanding what a child’s inner world is trying to say.
Schoolyard Secrets is both a handbook and a mirror — one that helps adults see children more clearly and compassionately. It offers tools for building emotional literacy, fostering resilience, and nurturing the bond between adult and child. Whether you’re a teacher watching patterns unfold in a busy classroom or a parent trying to make sense of your child’s shifting moods, this book provides the guidance you need to respond with insight rather than frustration.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
