Science of Arithmetic: in Three Parts, Part 1

Science Of Arithmetic: In Three Parts, Part 1 by William A. Shepard is an early educational primer that introduces the decimal system and the basic methods of numerical calculation. The text outlines the fundamental ideas of numeration and notation, explains how numbers are named and written, and then presents the four elementary operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It includes a pedagogical Preface and a Note to the Teacher, emphasizing clear explanations, constant practice, and the use of visual aids to help young learners grasp concepts such as units, tens, hundreds, and thousands. The book also provides a comprehensive set of drills and example problems designed to build fluency in mental and written arithmetic and to establish a solid understanding of the base-10 system. A second part of the series is announced, promising practical exercises applying the four operations to integers and fractions. The author is identified as the late principal of the mathematical department of the Brimmer School, Boston.
