Item description from seller

Hardcover. Sir George Catlin (1896-1979) was an English political scientist. He entered this field in its relative infancy, especially in England. It was more advanced in the United States, and Catlin spent much of his life as a professor at Cornell University and other universities and colleges in the United States and Canada. He was a strong proponent of Anglo-American cooperation and wrote a book titled One Anglo-American Nation (1941). Catlin completed his PhD at Cornell, and this publication was his doctoral thesis. It is divided into 3 parts: Politics, History, and the Data of Politics; The Method of Politics; and Politics and Ethics. The second part particularly focuses on the new field of political science, with chapters on The Possibility of a Political Science; The Place of Politics Among the Social Sciences; and The Process of Politics. The book includes a tipped-in contemporaneous review from The Outlook (1927), which includes a quote, "Mr. Catlin is disturbed at the comparative failure of his science to give a clear lead to critical, inquiring minds." An interesting perspective on a newly-developing social science field. Octavo. Blue cloth covered boards with gilt title to spine. Front cover is bubbled near right edge. Front and back covers have some rubbing and fading. Sunning to spine. Pages are yellowed but clean. 360 pages, including index. POLSCI/070506.
