Denmark has made significant R&D efforts over the last few years and plans to spend 2% of its GNP on R&D by the year 2000. The business sector, largely composed of traditional industries with a low level of R&D relative to other OECD countries, has largely contributed to these efforts. This study presents a detailed analysis of the Danish research and innovation system and related government policies. Its recommendations focus on the need for a national R&D strategy, for greater selectivity in government support, and for reinforcing those institutions responsible for promoting science and technology policy.
