Scientists highlights an assortment of astronomers, chemists, physicists, geologists, and biologists, profiling their lives and contributions and explaining the basics of their theories and discoveries. World War I discusses the causes of the conflict and offers a chronological recounting of major campaigns. Double-page spreads comprise short sections of text, maps, charts, and photographs, with short inset articles on associated topics and excerpts from related primary sources. Sources, which range from diaries, interviews, and advertisements to government documents and works of literature, are identified and put into context, with any unusual vocabulary defined for the reader.
