First published in 1810, The Scottish Chiefs is a celebrated historical romance by the English novelist Jane Porter (1776–1850), recounting the exploits of the Scottish national hero Sir William Wallace during the Wars of Scottish Independence in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. Combining historical events with romantic adventure, patriotism and tragedy, the novel follows Wallace's struggle against English domination, incorporating such figures as Robert the Bruce and Edward I. Although taking considerable liberties with historical fact, Porter's work enjoyed enormous popularity throughout the nineteenth century and became one of the most influential romantic portrayals of Wallace, helping to establish his enduring image as a heroic champion of Scottish liberty.
