About this title

Synopsis

This book, by the renowned author, traces the history of Aberdeenshire from its earliest times to the present. Having special significance for its geographical features and the North Sea oil industry that emerged on its shores, the county is also rich in historical sites and ancient mysteries. This text explores the gradual development of Aberdeenshire's social and industrial scenes from the twelfth century onwards and discusses major industries in its development, including granite, textiles, papermaking, whisky distilling, shipbuilding, and fishing. The author does not neglect the many castles, churches, and ancient monuments that dot the landscape, and goes on to examine the diverse character of the region, from its coastal communities to its rural hinterland. This insightful book reveals the ways in which past events have shaped the present-day character of this beautiful and fascinating county.
