First edition, second variant issue, Contemporary ½ leather binding with marbled boards, raised bands and gilt lettering on spine, spine with some restoration, 394 pages, frontis, + 24 illustrations, some abrasions to spine, minor edge wear, scattered foxing, two page edges have tape repair, small old Chicago bookseller?s stamp on a blank page. Overall a very good copy. This copy is a variant between the first and second issue as it has with the oval frontis which Jenkins states is the first issue, but doesn?t have the errata, or ?Indian Red? in text. This copy was presented to the Newberry Library in 1911 by Edward Everett Ayer and has his presentation bookplate on the front end-sheet, there is a small label stating that the copy has been removed from the library on the front end-sheet, and Ayer?s small bookplate on the rear end-sheet. Basic Texas Books 162, This is an interesting reminiscence of a Yankee who became a Texas Ranger and later a Union Spy. J. Frank Dobie said, "Pike tells a bully story to be ranked along with the personal narratives of those other two vivid ranger chroniclers, James B. Gillett and N.A. Jennings." Graff 3286, Howes P369.
